09 Sep 2011

Who will join us for our Orange Bike Tour on Thursday 22nd of September, 2011?

Orange Bike Tour em Brasília

The Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands and ONG Rodas da Paz are organizing, in the context of Ano da Holanda no Brasil 2011, an

Pelotão Laranja

Orange Bike Tour

The bike tour is organized in the Week of Mobility (18-25 September) and will be on Dia Mundial Sem Carro 2011, to emphasize the Dutch bicycle culture and daily use of bikes as the most common mode of transportation in the Netherlands.

We are aiming to have as many people in dressed in orange as possible on the day of the Orange Bike Tour. Our tours will include all nationalities, friends, family, colleagues, politicians and others with love for cycling, and together, on our bikes, we will have an exciting but relaxing morning.

Our route starts at the Embassy of the Netherlands in Brasília up until the Instituto de Pesquisa Econômica Aplicada (IPEA).

The official start of our tour is at 08:30hrs, at the Embassy of the Netherlands. This is the place where everyone will meet, get together and prepare for our tour. We know the starting time of the tour is early, and this is why we have decided that we would like to offer you freshly baked Dutch apple pies with tea or coffee, so that your energy will be boosted and everyone will be ready to cycle. After this, we will commence our Orange Bike Tour, while being led by cyclists of Rodas da Paz, to the Eixo Monumental that is partly blocked off for cars and turned into a ‘Faixa Para Ciclistas’ (Cyclist lane). At this point we will make a pits-stop and offer you some refreshments/water/etc to get you cooled down for the second half of our tour. The Holland Stand will hand out some little Holland-presents and brochures of our cycling routes in Brasília. At this point it is up to you to decide if you want finish the bike tour to IPEA, where we will announce the winner of one of the VIP Ano da Holanda no  Brasil bikes made by Houston Bikes(!) or you can decide to end your journey at the Eixo Monumental. If you decide to unfortunately end your journey at the Eixo Monumental, we will have arranged transportation for you and your bicycle back to the Embassy of the Netherlands. After our stop we will cycle on to the Instituto da Pesquisa Econômica Aplicada (IPEA).

The tour is about 10 km in total, fun, relaxing, for the young, elderly people and the most important thing it is not a race so most of all enjoy!

A debate on urban mobility, cycling and safety, the environment, health and infrastructure will take place at the Instituto da Pesquisa Econômica Aplicada right after the end of the Orange Bike Tour. This debate is organized by Ministério das Cidades with assistance of The Embassy of the Netherlands and Rodas da Paz. The official start is at 10:00hrs.

Whoever does not feel up to attending the debate, don’t worry, we will arrange for transportation for you and your bicycles from IPEA back to the Embassy of the Netherlands.

Our goals is: To support the ambitions of local organizations and the governments for improving the conditions of cycling for the cyclist, while at the same time showing Brasília our large Dutch cycling culture that has existed for many years and to use this day as an opportunity to share our knowledge about cycling, and everything about it, with Brazil. In the Netherlands, cycling is for the young and old, during the summer and the winter, and for all levels of the Dutch society.

Thanks to the support and sponsorship of the Dutch organizations FUGRO and KLM, the first 100 people that confirm their presence at the Orange Bike Tour will receive a beautiful orange T-shirt on the day of the bike tour. We will also have a first-come first-serve rule concerning our sponsored KLM sun caps. But of course we hope and strongly encourage everyone to dress up in orange so that we (while cycling) will maximize visibility of our Pelotão Laranja for the press and people watching us along the route. As mentioned earlier, the signed up participants have the opportunity to WIN a luxurious bike made by Houston Bikes, for the Pelotão Laranja for Ano da Holanda do Brasil. We would also like to offer you a brochure including two bicycle routes, the architectural route, Rota Monumental, and the nature route, Rota do Lazer, so that you can grab your bike and cycle while enjoying everything that the city of Brasília has to offer. The two routes are designed as a sort of gift to Brasília in the spitirt of Ano da Holanda no Brasil 2011. We would like to take this opportunity to share our knowledge of bicycles in all aspects, with Brazil, and we think that this is the perfect chance to do so!

Children are more than welcome to join, but it is up to parents to decide whether your child feels comfortable with cycling in a large group. Don’t worry about the pace; remember it is supposed to be a fun and relaxing journey for everyone. The more cycling fans the better! So please join us and sign up by Monday the 19th of September.

PLEASE PAY ATTENTION: 1. THE FIRST 100 APPLICANTS GET SPECIALY T-SHIRTS, 2. FIRST-COME FIRST-SERVE RULE FOR SUN CAPS, 3. YOU MIGHT JUST WIN A ‘ANO DA HOLANDA NO BRASIL’ HOUSTON BIKE AFTER THE BIKE TOUR.

Why would you not want to attend this exciting event?

·         I’m not up for the physical challenge… - Don’t worry. The route is short and the pace is low. And if you are very worried, then you still have a couple of weeks to get into shape!
