The official Brazilian area is 8,514,876.599 km2 , which represents 205 times the area of The Netherlands.
Brazil is located in the east portion of South America and is the largest country in the region. It is the fifth largest country in the world, behind Russia, Canada, China and The United States.
The official Brazilian area is 8,514,876.599 km2 , which represents 205 times the area of The Netherlands. Brazil´s has a very large coastline, with 7,491km of extension in the Atlantic Ocean. Brazil´s climate is mostly tropical. The Southern area of the country has temperate climate, though.
Because of its great size, Brazil is divided in five geographical regions:
1. North: is the Amazon area. This region is one of the most socially and economically underdeveloped areas in the country, in spite of fact that it is located in the greatest rainforest in the world. The following States form the region: Rondônia, Acre, Amazonas, Pará, Roraima, Amapá and Tocantins.
2. Northeast: this region is where the Portuguese began the colonization process. It is also socially underdeveloped. It is formed by the following States: Bahia, Sergipe, Alagoas, Pernambuco, Paraíba, Rio Grande do Norte, Ceará, Piauí e Maranhão.
3. Centro-oeste (Center west): It is the region of the Federal District. The main characteristic of the region are: its high agricultural production and the Pantanal of Mato Grosso. Socially, it is not as underdeveloped as the North and Northeast, and not as developed as the Souteast and South Regions. It is formed by the States of: Mato Grosso, Mato Grosso do Sul, Goiás and the Federal District.
4. Southeast: this is the wealthiest region of the country. São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro are in the Southeast. The region is composed of the following states: Sao Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, Minas Gerais and Espírito Santo.
5. South: It is the most socially developed area of the country. The main European immigration colonies are in this region. The States of Paraná, Santa Catarina and Rio Grande do Sul form the region.
There are several kinds of landscape to see in Brazil. The Amazon Rainforest, which is the biggest rainforest in the world; the coast line with beautiful beaches; the ‘Pantanal’, a great area of flood plains in Mato Grosso and Mato Grosso do Sul; the ‘Cerrado’, which is the biggest savanna in the world and is located mainly in the states of Goiás, Federal District, and Minas Gerais, among others.
Brazil´s Capital is Brasília, located in the Federal District.
